The Great Depression
The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, Tampere
- 11.11.2023–18.8.2024
Dorothea Lange's photographs tell the story of United States citizens affected by the Great Depression.
The depression started with the stock market crash and lasted through the 1930s, causing mass unemployment, poverty, and internal migration to California.
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) is considered one of the pioneers of documentary photography. The picture "Migrant Mother" she took of mother-of-seven Florence Thompson is considered an iconic image of the Great Depression. The photos in the exhibition are from the collections of the Library of Congress.
